The Everest Base Camp Trek is a 14 day Himalayan adventure through the heart of the Khumbu region. Walk beneath towering peaks, cross suspension bridges, explore Sherpa villages and ancient monasteries, and experience the unique culture of the Himalayas. Reach Everest Base Camp at 5,364 m and climb Kala Patthar at 5,550 m for breathtaking views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam. With Nepal Himalayas Trekking, turn your dream of standing at the foot of Everest into an unforgettable journey.
The Everest Base Camp Trek is a classic 14-day Himalayan journey through Nepal's Khumbu region. Starting from Lukla, the route passes through Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, and Gorak Shep before reaching Everest Base Camp at approximately 5,364 metres (17,598 ft). The trek also involves an early-morning climb of Kala Patthar at around 5,545 metres (18,192 ft), which is the best vantage point along the trail for Everest and other Himalayan peaks.
You don't need mountaineering experience to reach Everest Base Camp. It is, however, a serious high-altitude journey. Most trekking days involve several hours of walking across steep, uneven terrain, and the air thins noticeably above 3,000 metres. A steady pace, proper acclimatization, the right equipment, good hydration, and honesty about how you're feeling matter far more than raw fitness or speed.
Nepal Himalayas Trekking has been organizing Himalayan journeys since 2012. Our Everest Base Camp departures include guides, accommodation, permits, and route logistics — arranged in advance so you can focus entirely on the trek.

The Everest Base Camp Trek is celebrated not because it requires a technical climb of Everest, but because it doesn't. The route combines high Himalayan scenery with the culture and daily life of the Khumbu.
Along the way, you'll walk beneath some of the world's highest mountains: Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, and Pumori. You'll explore Namche Bazaar and Tengboche Monastery, cross the Khumbu Glacier's moraine, and spend two acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche that are as integral to the journey as any single summit view.
The real achievement isn't a sign at Base Camp. It's the gradual move from lower valleys into high-altitude terrain, and everything you experience along the way.
Choosing a trekking operator is a question of trust. You're relying on a company for your flights, permits, accommodation, guide and porter arrangements, and for sound judgment in a remote mountain environment where conditions change fast.
Nepal Himalayas Trekking is led by Mr. Prakash Lamsal, our founder and Managing Director, who began his tourism career in 2012 as a porter-guide in Dhading and has since built more than 15 years of experience as a licensed trekking guide, tour leader, and expedition organizer across Nepal, Tibet, Bhutan, and India. He is supported by Mr. Basu Lamsal, our company Director and Manager with over 20 years in Nepali tourism, and Pradip Khanal, our Guide Leader and Marketing Manager, who has guided in the Khumbu and beyond since 2014.
Our Everest region field team includes government-licensed guides such as Ratna Singh Tamang, Buddhi Magar Thapa, Dhurba Adhikari, and Ngwang Gombu Sherpa — the latter born and raised in the Everest region, with direct experience guiding Everest Base Camp, Island Peak, and Lobuche Peak.
Our itinerary is built around proper acclimatization in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche — not a rush to Base Camp. We're affiliated with the Nepal Mountaineering Association, TAAN (Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal), and the Nepal Tourism Board.
Beyond the standard package, we offer private, group, budget, luxury, and helicopter-return options so trekkers can match their budget, schedule, and comfort level. We handle the logistics and stay in contact before, during, and after the trek — not just until the booking is confirmed.
Kathmandu - Lukla - Phakding - Namche Bazaar - Tengboche - Dingboche - Lobuche - Gorak Shep - Everest Base Camp - Kala Patthar - Pheriche - Namche Bazaar - Lukla - Kathmandu
The classic route includes two planned acclimatization stops which are Namche Bazaar and Dingboche that is very essential rather than optional. The trek climbs from around 2,600 metres at the start to more than 5,000 metres near Base Camp and Kala Patthar. Rushing this elevation profile is one of the most common causes of altitude-related problems on the trail.
Everest Base Camp is the staging ground for mountaineering expeditions approaching Everest from the Nepal side. For trekkers, reaching it is a journey — not a summit attempt. You walk to the area and return along the same trekking route; no climbing is involved.
There are two commonly referenced Everest base camps. South Base Camp sits on the Nepalese side at approximately 5,364 m and is reached by the multi-day trek from Lukla. North Base Camp is on the Tibetan side at approximately 5,150 m and is accessible by road from Tingri. This trek visits South Base Camp.
A significant portion of the trek passes through Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The landscape changes dramatically with altitude: lower sections hold forests of pine, fir, juniper, and rhododendron, while higher terrain gives way to alpine meadows, glaciers, and exposed high-mountain wilderness.
Wildlife includes the Himalayan tahr, musk deer, and Himalayan monal; the snow leopard is present but rarely seen. Trekkers should carry reusable water bottles, minimize plastic use, dispose of waste responsibly, respect wildlife, and follow park regulations. Responsible trekking matters more, not less, in a high-altitude environment where waste management is genuinely difficult.
Many first-time trekkers assume Everest Base Camp offers the best view of Everest. It doesn't. Surrounding peaks and ridgelines block the summit from Base Camp itself, while Kala Patthar which is at approximately 5,545 metres, delivers a far wider, more dramatic panorama.
The ascent typically begins before sunrise from Gorak Shep. As the sun rises, the surrounding peaks shift color dramatically, making it one of the most memorable moments of the entire trek. The summit provides views of Everest, Pumori, Nuptse, Lhotse, and Khumbutse. Because you're above 5,500 metres, your guide will factor in weather, group condition, and any reported symptoms before leading the climb. It should not be treated casually.

Ama Dablam is one of the defining mountains of the Khumbu and is particularly prominent from several points along the route. The full list of peaks visible along the trail are Lobuche Peak, Cholatse, Taboche, and Khumbutse, which merits its own dedicated guide.
The Everest region offers world-class attractions that draw thousands of trekkers annually. The primary attraction is Mount Everest itself, but the journey encompasses much more including ancient Buddhist monasteries like Tengboche and Pangboche, traditional Sherpa villages showcasing authentic mountain culture, Sagarmatha National Park with its unique Himalayan ecosystem, and breathtaking viewpoints like Kala Patthar. The region also features the famous Namche Bazaar market, colorful prayer flags, mani walls with carved Buddhist mantras, and encounters with yaks, mountain goats, and if lucky, rare Himalayan wildlife. The cultural richness combined with natural grandeur makes this trek an unforgettable attraction.
Accessibility to the Everest region has significantly improved over the years. The journey begins with a scenic 35-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, operated daily by several domestic airlines. While weather can occasionally delay flights, this aerial route has made the trek accessible to thousands. The trekking trails are well-established and maintained, with clear signage at major junctions. However, trekkers should note that there are no roads beyond Lukla, making helicopter services the primary emergency access. The trails include numerous suspension bridges, stone steps, and some steep sections requiring moderate fitness levels. Mobile network coverage (Ncell and Nepal Telecom) is available in most villages, and internet connectivity is accessible in tea houses for a fee.
The Everest Base Camp trek offers a range of accommodation options, primarily tea houses and lodges. These family-run establishments provide basic but comfortable rooms with twin beds, mattresses, pillows, and blankets. Most rooms are unheated, so sleeping bags are recommended for warmth. Bathrooms are generally shared (except in Namche and Lukla where some lodges offer attached bathrooms), and hot showers are available for an additional charge. The tea houses have communal dining areas with heating (usually a bukhari stove) where trekkers gather for meals and socializing. Accommodation quality decreases with altitude, becoming more basic beyond Lobuche. During peak seasons, advance booking through your trekking company is essential. Luxury lodges are available in Namche Bazaar and some lower villages for those seeking premium comfort.
The Khumbu region offers surprisingly good amenities considering its remote location. Most tea houses provide varied menus featuring Nepali dal bhat, international dishes like pasta, pizza, and pancakes, along with hot beverages. Charging facilities for electronic devices are available for a fee, with costs increasing at higher altitudes. WiFi internet is widely available in tea houses for USD 3-5 per day. ATMs are available in Namche Bazaar (though unreliable), so carrying sufficient cash is advisable. Medical facilities include health posts in major villages and a well-equipped clinic in Namche run by the Himalayan Rescue Association. Shops in Namche sell trekking gear, snacks, and basic supplies. Bakeries in Namche and other villages offer fresh pastries and bread. Water purification tablets and bottled water are available, though filtered water refills are more environmentally friendly and cost-effective.
Your 14-day journey gradually takes you from the busy streets of Kathmandu into the high Himalayas. Each day brings something different, from your first walk through the Dudh Koshi Valley and the lively mountain town of Namche Bazaar to Buddhist monasteries, high-altitude villages, glaciers, and finally Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar.
The table below gives you a quick look at how far you'll walk, where you'll sleep, and how the altitude changes each day. For the full day-by-day experience, including what to expect on the trail and the main highlights, see our detailed Everest Base Camp Trek itinerary below/above.

The Everest Base Camp Trek is generally rated moderate to strenuous. There's no technical mountaineering, but the combination of altitude, long walking days, steep terrain, and cold makes it physically demanding. The most common mistake is judging difficulty by distance alone. A short uphill section above 4,500 metres can feel far harder than the same stretch at sea level.
What makes it demanding:
Can beginners do it? Yes, with proper preparation, a gradual itinerary, and professional support. Fitness helps you walk comfortably, but it does not make you immune to altitude sickness. Anyone can develop altitude-related illness regardless of age or experience.
Useful preparation:
Acclimatization is not optional. The classic itinerary includes planned acclimatization days in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche — "climb high, sleep low." Your guide monitors the group, but you must communicate honestly. Don't hide symptoms to avoid slowing others. If you develop a persistent headache, nausea, dizziness, or unusual fatigue — tell your guide immediately. The response can range from rest and halted ascent to descent or emergency evacuation, depending on severity. A responsible guide will never pressure you to push on simply because the schedule calls for it.

Season |
Conditions |
|
Spring (Mar–May) |
Stable weather, warming temperatures, good visibility, rhododendron blooms at lower elevations. Busy, but excellent. |
|
Autumn (Sep–Nov) |
Clear skies, reliable weather, comfortable trekking temperatures. Consistently the most popular season. |
|
Winter (Dec–Feb) |
Colder, possible snow and ice above 4,000 m, quieter trails. More challenging but doable for well-prepared trekkers. |
|
Monsoon (Jun–Aug) |
Rain, cloud, and possible flight disruptions. Some trekking still possible, but views are limited and conditions less predictable. |
The Nepal Tourism Board broadly identifies March–May and October–November as the most favorable periods for Sagarmatha National Park trekking.

Two packages with similar-looking itineraries can differ substantially in what you actually receive. Price is driven by group size, private versus shared trekking, guide-to-client ratio, porter arrangements, Kathmandu hotel category, teahouse standard, flight arrangements, helicopter options, extra rest days, meal inclusions, equipment rental, and travel season. The lowest headline price isn't always the cheapest option once exclusions are factored in.
Acute Mountain Sickness is the most common form of altitude illness, typically occurring above 2,500m when the body hasn't adequately adjusted to decreased oxygen levels.
Symptoms Include:
Prevention and Treatment:
HAPE is a severe, life-threatening condition where fluid accumulates in the lungs, making breathing extremely difficult. It typically occurs above 3,000m and can develop rapidly.
Symptoms Include:
Emergency Action Required:
HACE is the most severe form of altitude sickness where fluid accumulates in the brain. This is a life-threatening emergency requiring immediate action.
Symptoms Include:
Emergency Action Required:
Helicopter Rescue Services: The Everest region has well-established helicopter rescue services operating from Kathmandu and Lukla. Several companies provide emergency evacuation services, and helicopters can reach most locations in the Khumbu region within 30-60 minutes of favorable weather.
Important Points About Rescue:
Emergency Contacts: Your trekking company will provide emergency contact numbers, but common rescue services include:

A reusable bottle with purification tablets or a filter is far cheaper than buying bottled water and significantly better for the trail.
Useful planning ranges for daily personal spending:
Most trekkers carry an extra USD 350–450 in Nepalese rupees for personal expenses on the trek, in addition to the package cost. Don't assume cards or ATMs will be available above Namche.
Teahouses are the backbone of the classic EBC experience. Rooms are simple — two beds, mattresses, blankets, basic furniture — with shared bathrooms more common at higher elevations and private or attached bathrooms easier to find lower on the trail. The dining room is typically the social center of each lodge: trekkers gather around a stove in the evenings, eat together, and compare notes on the day.
Food is surprisingly varied given the remoteness. Dal bhat, noodles, pasta, fried rice, soup, momos, eggs, potatoes, pancakes, Tibetan bread, porridge, tea, and coffee are all commonly available, with pizza appearing in larger villages. Dal bhat remains one of the most practical trekking meals — filling, familiar throughout Nepal, and reliably available at every altitude. Appetite can change at elevation; eating enough matters regardless.
For water: use boiled, filtered, or properly treated water throughout. A reusable bottle with purification tablets or a quality filter is far preferable to relying on single-use plastic the whole way up — and considerably cheaper above Namche.
Tip: Much of this gear can be rented in Thamel, Kathmandu's main trekking district. If you rent, always check the item's actual temperature rating and condition before accepting it. If you want to know more about Packing List needed for Everest Trek visit our Everest Base Camp Trek Packing List Guide.
The 14-day itinerary is a tried-and-tested framework, not the only way to experience the Everest region. Options include:
Current Nepal Tourism Board guidance lists Everest Base Camp among the routes requiring a licensed trekking guide and an agency-issued TIMS card. Start from that official requirement rather than older information suggesting EBC can be trekked independently.
In practice, guided trekking serves most trekkers well regardless of the rules: a good guide manages route navigation, pacing, altitude monitoring, symptom recognition, lodge coordination, local communication, cultural interpretation, weather-related decisions, flight-disruption planning, and emergency coordination. A guide doesn't remove every risk from a high-altitude trek, but good guiding makes the decisions considerably better-informed.
No trekking company can honestly promise a risk-free trek at this altitude. Responsible guiding is about recognizing risk early and making sound decisions — not eliminating uncertainty altogether.
Practical altitude guidelines:
Possible altitude sickness symptoms include persistent headache, nausea, dizziness, and unusual fatigue. If symptoms worsen, the response can range from rest and halted ascent to descent or emergency helicopter evacuation, depending on severity.
Your policy should explicitly cover:
A standard travel policy does not automatically cover trekking above 5,000 metres. Check before you buy, and keep your policy details accessible throughout the trek.
Kathmandu–Lukla flights typically run USD 260–280 one way (approximately USD 520–560 round trip).
Weather-related delays and cancellations: Lukla's airstrip is short, high-altitude, and surrounded by mountains, so flights depend heavily on clear visibility and calm wind at both ends of the route. During poor weather — low cloud, fog, or high wind — the regular Kathmandu–Lukla flight can be delayed by several hours or cancelled outright for the day. This is a routine part of flying in the Khumbu, not a sign of a poorly run trip, and it's precisely why we build a buffer day into the itinerary before your next international flight (see below).
Ramechhap (Manthali) Airport shift: During the busy spring and autumn seasons, Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport becomes congested with limited runway slots for domestic mountain flights. To reduce delays caused by this air traffic bottleneck, Lukla flights are often shifted to depart from Ramechhap (Manthali) Airport instead of Kathmandu. When this happens, you'll take a road transfer of around 4–5 hours from Kathmandu to Ramechhap, usually starting in the very early hours of the morning (around 1:00–2:00 AM), to catch a short 15–20 minute flight to Lukla from there. This arrangement is decided by the airlines and Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, typically with only a day or two of notice, so it isn't something we — or you — can plan around in advance. We monitor these updates closely and will let you know as soon as the departure airport is confirmed for your dates.
Practical takeaway: Whether it's weather in the mountains or congestion in Kathmandu, Lukla flight schedules can shift with little warning in both directions of the trek. Build flexibility into your travel plans, avoid booking an international departure for the day immediately after your expected return to Kathmandu, and keep your travel insurance's trip-delay coverage in mind for exactly this reason.
We rarely need to cancel a confirmed trek, and where a group departure genuinely cannot proceed, we offer flexible postponement at no additional charge. How many days does the Everest Base Camp Trek take?
The classic itinerary is 14 days including arrival and departure in Kathmandu. Shorter versions and helicopter-return options are available at roughly 10–12 days.
How high is Everest Base Camp?
Approximately 5,364 metres (17,598 ft) on the Nepal (south) side.
What is the highest point in Everest trekking?
Kala Patthar, at approximately 5,545 metres (18,192 ft) — higher than Base Camp itself.
Is Everest visible from Base Camp?
Only partially. Surrounding ridges obstruct the summit from Base Camp. Kala Patthar is the better viewpoint.
How difficult is the Everest trek?
Moderate to strenuous. No technical climbing is involved, but altitude, long walking days, cold, and steep terrain make it genuinely demanding.
Can a beginner do the 14 days Everest Base Camp Trek?
Yes — with reasonable fitness, proper preparation, gradual acclimatization, and professional support.
Do I need a guide for Everest Base Camp Trekking?
Yes. Nepal Tourism Board rules list Everest Base Camp among the routes requiring a licensed guide and an agency-issued TIMS card. Confirm current requirements with your agency before departure.
What permits are required during EBC Trek?
A Sagarmatha National Park entry permit, a Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Trek-Card, and a TIMS card — all normally arranged as part of a guided package.
What's the best time to go for Everest Trekking?
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the most stable weather and clearest views.
Can I return by helicopter?
Yes, helicopter return from the upper Khumbu shortens the trip to roughly 10–12 days and starts from approximately USD 3,290.
How long do you walk each day?
Typically 5–8 hours, depending on route, pace, weather, and acclimatization requirements.
Do I need a porter for EBC trek?
A porter carries your luggage; a guide manages route and safety — they are different roles. Many trekkers use both, as carrying a heavy load at high altitude makes the trek considerably harder.
Can I charge my devices on the trek?
Yes, at most teahouses, though higher lodges may charge more and supply can be limited. A power bank is strongly recommended.
Is Wi-Fi available?
In many lodges, but reliability varies. Don't count on fast, uninterrupted internet above Namche.
How much extra cash should I carry?
Plan for roughly USD 350–450 in Nepalese rupees for personal expenses, depending on your package and spending habits. Don't rely entirely on cards or ATMs above Namche.
What happens if I get altitude sickness?
Tell your guide immediately. The response depends on severity and can include rest, halting ascent, descent, or arranging medical evacuation.
Can Lukla flights be delayed?
Yes — weather and operational conditions regularly affect mountain flights. Build a buffer day into your travel plan.
Is travel insurance necessary?
Yes. Choose a policy that explicitly covers high-altitude trekking and emergency helicopter evacuation — standard policies often don't.
The Everest Base Camp Trek is more than a walk to a famous destination. It's a journey through the Khumbu Valley — from the forests and suspension bridges around Lukla and Phakding to the high alpine terrain around Lobuche, Gorak Shep, and Base Camp itself — taking in Sherpa villages, Buddhist monasteries, glaciers, and some of the most recognized mountains on earth along the way.
The itinerary matters. The guide matters. Acclimatization matters. And so does having a company that manages the practical decisions calmly when mountain conditions change.
Nepal Himalayas Trekking offers standard 14-day, private, group, budget, luxury, and helicopter-return Everest Base Camp packages, starting from approximately USD 1,690 per person.

Your trek officially begins the moment you land at Tribhuvan International Airport, where our team meets you and transfers you to your hotel in Kathmandu. The rest of the day is built around preparation, not sightseeing — though if your flight lands early, there's no harm in a short walk through Thamel, the tourist quarter where most trekking shops, bakeries, and gear rental stores are clustered.
The core of Day 1 is a full gear check: we go through your packing list item by item, flag anything missing, and point you toward reliable rental or purchase options in Kathmandu if needed (down jackets, sleeping bags rated for sub-zero temperatures, and trekking poles are commonly rented here rather than carried from home). This is followed by a permit briefing, where we explain exactly what documentation you'll need and confirm everything is in order, and an introduction to your guide — for most travelers, this is your first meeting with Prakash himself, and the first chance to ask the questions that only come to mind once you're actually standing in Nepal.
Use the evening to rest. Jet lag plus a 35-minute flight at dawn the next day is not a combination you want to fight with poor sleep.
Walking: None | Overnight: Hotel in Kathmandu | Meals: Welcome dinner (if scheduled)

|
|
|
|

Flights for Everest Base Camp Trek
Kathmandu–Lukla flights typically run USD 260–280 one way (approximately USD 520–560 round trip). During peak season, flights may route via Ramechhap Airport, adding a road transfer from Kathmandu.
We pay and insure our porters fairly. Porter welfare is not negotiable.
Accommodation, food, and services increase in price with altitude, as everything must be carried in.

Travel Insurance helps in covering medical emergencies in higher altitudes. It also helps in high-altitude evacuation and helps refurbish the lost or damaged gears and luggage. Very the policies before buying one.
Trekkers typically do not spend the night at EBC itself. They usually stay at Gorak Shep, the last settlement before EBC, and make a day trip to the base camp.
There is no specific weight limit, but being in good physical condition is important. Porters typically carry loads up to 20-25 kg (44-55 lbs) for trekkers.
Yes, you can trek solo, but hiring a guide or joining a group is recommended for safety and support.
Many trekkers find the journey and the views of the Himalayas, including Everest, to be incredibly rewarding and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
No, you don't need a tent as trekkers stay in teahouses along the route.
Basic toilets are available at the teahouses and lodges along the trek. Facilities at EBC itself are very basic.
Some teahouses offer hot showers for an additional fee, but the availability decreases as you ascend.
Supplemental oxygen is not typically required for EBC, but it's essential to acclimatize properly to avoid altitude sickness.
Altitude sickness is common. Trekkers should take it seriously, acclimatize properly, and be aware of the symptoms.
No, the death zone is considered to be above 8,000 meters (26,247 feet). EBC is at 5,364 meters (17,598 feet).
Temperatures can drop to -20°C (-4°F) or lower at night during the trekking seasons.
Trekkers typically do not sleep at EBC. The base camp is mainly used by climbers attempting to summit Everest.
Climbers stay at EBC for several weeks to acclimatize and prepare for their summit attempt.
It can be crowded, especially during peak trekking seasons (spring and autumn).
The trek is generally safe if proper precautions are taken, but risks include altitude sickness, weather conditions, and injuries.
This depends on personal preferences. Kilimanjaro is a shorter but steeper trek, whereas EBC offers a longer cultural and scenic experience.
The best months are March to May (pre-monsoon) and September to November (post-monsoon).
Trekkers typically walk 5-7 hours per day.
This question is similar to question 4. The cost varies between $1,590 to $3,000 per person.
Summer is the monsoon season in Nepal, bringing heavy rains, increased avalanche risk, and poor visibility.
The extreme altitude, harsh weather conditions, and difficult terrain make body retrievals dangerous and expensive.
The high altitude and unpredictable weather conditions make it dangerous for commercial flights to fly over Everest.
Stable weather and moderate temperatures
Blooming rhododendron forests
Crystal-clear views of Mount Everest and surrounding peaks
Ideal climbing season atmosphere at Base Camp
Clearest skies of the year
Crisp mountain air and excellent visibility
Peak trekking season in the Sagarmatha National Park
Comfortable daytime temperatures
Winter (Mid-December–February) is colder but quieter, while the Monsoon (Mid-June–August) brings lush greenery but limited mountain views and flight disruptions.
Note: Still, a few tourists are doing the Everest Base Camp Trek in Mid-December to February and Mid-June to August, & We, Nepal Himalayas Trekking Company, are also available to book your Trek on that time.
Altitude is the biggest challenge of the Everest Base Camp Trek.
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) risk increases above 2,500 meters
Everest Base Camp sits at 5,364 meters
Kala Patthar rises to 5,545 meters
Namche Bazaar (3,440m)
Dingboche (4,360m)
These acclimatization days are carefully built into Nepal Himalayas Trekking itineraries to reduce AMS risk. Proper hydration, gradual ascent, and professional guides are crucial for safety.
To enter the Everest region, trekkers must obtain:
Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit
Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit
The total cost is approximately USD $50–$60 combined, subject to updates by authorities.
Nepal Himalayas Trekking arranges all permits and logistics, ensuring a hassle-free trekking experience.

• Planning cuts stress on long days
Stay nourished, hydrated and rested on your Everest Base Camp Trek. Nepal Himalayas Trekking manages food, drinks and lodges so you focus on the trail ahead.
Payment planning is critical for the Everest Base Camp Trek. The higher you go, the fewer payment options you find. Nepal Himalayas Trekking always advises trekkers to prepare cash properly before leaving Kathmandu.
Cash is King on the EBC Trek
Cash remains the primary payment method on the Everest trekking route.
You will need cash for:
• Meals and drinks
• Charging devices
• Hot showers
• WiFi
• Snacks and bakery items
• Tips for guide and porter
• Extra nights due to weather delay
Most teahouses, especially above Namche, accept only Nepalese Rupees.
ATM Availability on the Everest Route
ATMs are limited.
You find ATMs in:
• Lukla (sometimes unreliable)
• Namche Bazaar (limited cash supply)
There are no ATMs beyond Namche Bazaar.
Important facts:
• ATMs often run out of cash in peak season
• Machines may not work due to internet issues
• Withdrawal limits apply
• No ATM access in Dingboche, Lobuche, or Gorak Shep
Nepal Himalayas Trekking strongly recommends withdrawing sufficient cash in Kathmandu.
Card Payments on the Trek
Card payment is rare in the mountains.
You may find limited card facilities in:
• Lukla
• Namche Bazaar
However:
• Card machines depend on satellite internet
• Connection failures are common
• Many lodges add 3% to 5% service charge
• No card payments above Namche
Do not rely on credit or debit cards after Namche.
Money Exchange on the Route
Money exchange is available in:
• Namche Bazaar
Exchange rates are higher than Kathmandu. Always exchange money before flying to Lukla.
How Much Cash to Carry?
If your trek package includes accommodation and meals, you mainly need cash for personal expenses.
Recommended cash for 12–14 days trek:
• USD 200–400 equivalent in NPR
This covers:
• Lunches and drinks
• Charging and showers
• Snacks and extra comforts
• Tips
If trekking independently, carry more based on your daily budget.
Currency to Carry
Carry Nepalese Rupees only.
Do not depend on:
• USD payments in remote villages
• Foreign currency exchange above Namche
Break large notes in Kathmandu. Smaller bills are easier to use.
Online Transfers During Trek
Internet access exists in some villages via paid WiFi.
However:
• Signal is slow
• Bank transfers are not practical
• Mobile banking may not function properly
Complete all major payments before departure.
Tipping Payment
Tips are paid in cash at the end of the trek.
Standard guideline:
• Guide: USD 10–15 per day
• Porter: USD 8–12 per day
Prepare this amount in small denominations.
Emergency Cash Buffer
Weather delays are common in Lukla flights.
Carry extra cash in case of:
• Extra accommodation nights
• Helicopter upgrade
• Additional meals
Nepal Himalayas Trekking always monitors flight schedules and assists during delays.
Smart Payment Strategy for EBC Trek
Before flying to Lukla:
• Withdraw enough NPR in Kathmandu
• Break large notes
• Keep an emergency reserve
• Do not depend on ATMs or cards
This ensures a smooth trekking experience without financial stress.
The trek begins with a flight to Lukla Airport, officially known as Tenzing-Hillary Airport.
Due to unpredictable mountain weather:
Flights are frequently delayed or cancelled
Morning departures are common for better visibility
It is strongly recommended to add 1–2 buffer days to your itinerary, especially if you have international flights after the trek.
The average Everest Base Camp Trek cost ranges between:
USD $1,590 to $6,000+
Price depends on:
Group vs. private trek
Guide and porter services
Accommodation type (standard vs. luxury)
Domestic flights
Meals and additional services
Nepal Himalayas Trekking offers transparent pricing with no hidden costs.
Proper gear is critical for a safe and comfortable trek.
Strong, broken-in hiking boots
Down jacket
Sleeping bag (rated for -15°C)
Trekking poles
Thermal layers
Daytime: Around 10°C
Nighttime (higher elevations): Down to -15°C
Physical preparation with cardio and endurance training is recommended 6–8 weeks before departure.

Overall a great hike and a great experience. The hike itself is pretty easy, but the difficulty is the altitude. If you book a guided tour, your itinerary may vary, but is largely the same. From Lukla he arrives at his bazaar after two days of hiking, a day of acclimatization and a trek to his view point of Everest. You can then trek to Tengboche, visit the monastery and attend the monks' afternoon prayers. Arrive in Dingboche the next day for another acclimatization day. Trek through the forest to Dingboche. If it's not raining, you'll walk the dusty trails with many other trekkers, porters and transport animals, enjoying beautiful views of the valley and Dudkosi River. Especially when crossing various suspension bridges. After Dingboche the forest thins and we trek to Lobuche and then Gorak Shep and Base Camp seeing and trekking through vast spaces with stunning views of the majestic Himalayas. Me and my guide Prakash usually started the hike around 8am, reached the daily destinations around noon, rest rested and went to bed around 8Pm. It was very difficult as I felt sick during the hike. Because of the high altitude and the high breathing rate and the amount of water you carry, it's best to drink mainly warm water and wear a buff or mask in the very cold air. Drinking it can make your throat hurt. I went trekking with a guide & Porter. The Porter (Sherpa) carried most of my luggage and almost all of my belongings at higher altitudes. I can only recommend anyone trekking anywhere in Nepal to get a guide so you don't have to worry about flights, permits, where to sleep, etc. And having someone memorize the hike can save lives in more remote areas. It was a big plus to be able to leave money in a poor country and help the local people. I highly recommend Nepal Himalayas Trekking agency & the guide who sent me on the trek with me. Mr. Prakash is a very positive 33 year old who cheered me up and taught me about the mountains around me and the history of climbing. He has been in the trekking business for over 12 years and knows all the treks around Nepal and can plan treks just like the company does
That was surely some uphill for the first hour. Then the glorious Nepalese flat the rest of the way.

I had the pleasure of taking a 14-day Everest Base Camp Trek with Nepal Himalayas Trekking. The trip was arranged from Katmandu and they helped arrange transport to Ramechhap, stayed there, and helped me buy/rent the equipment I needed for the trek. They really understand what's required and help along the way provide WhatsApp messages to help along the way.
A friend and I took the 14 day trek with one of their very experienced guides Bharat who has 20+ years of experience doing guided trips all over the mountains of Nepal. Nepal Himalayas Trekking Company arranged for this Everest Base Camp Trek in Nepal in 2024. This Everest Base Camp Trek was expertly planned. Our Trek Guide is incredibly knowledgeable, accommodating, and reliable. They collaborated with Crystal Mountain. Throughout the Everest Base Camp hike, the guides maintained a fantastic pace. They expressed worry for our well-being and security. They made a special effort to assist. The ideal instance is when I chose to pause in the middle of a bridge to take a picture and misplaced my trekking pole.
We were unable to see the trekking pole, so I had no idea where it was. We couldn't tell, but I figured it dropped into the river below. I carried on with the hike, and an hour. Mr. Prakash Lamsal, the owner of Nepal Himalayas Trekking showed us great hospitality during out the Everest Base Camp Trek in Nepal.

I had dreamed of trekking to Everest Base Camp for many years, and after researching several local trekking companies, I decided to book with Nepal Himalayas Trekking. Their communication before the trip was excellent, and Mr. Prakash Lamsal answered all of my questions about the itinerary, altitude, permits, and equipment. His honest advice gave me confidence that I had chosen the right company.
When I arrived in Kathmandu, everything was arranged exactly as promised. I was welcomed at the airport and transferred to my hotel without any hassle. Before the trek, we attended a detailed briefing where our guide explained the route, daily walking distances, altitude safety, and what to expect during the journey.
Our flight to Lukla was one of the most exciting experiences of the trip. From there, we began trekking through beautiful Sherpa villages, crossing suspension bridges decorated with prayer flags and walking alongside the Dudh Koshi River. Every day offered incredible Himalayan scenery.
Namche Bazaar quickly became one of my favorite places. The acclimatization hike rewarded us with our first clear views of Mount Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and several other snow-covered peaks. Our guide carefully monitored everyone's health and encouraged us to walk slowly, making the trek enjoyable instead of exhausting.
As we continued through Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, and Gorak Shep, the landscape became more dramatic. Visiting Tengboche Monastery surrounded by towering mountains was a peaceful and memorable experience.
Reaching Everest Base Camp at 5,364 meters was an emotional moment. Standing beside the famous Khumbu Icefall after days of trekking felt like a dream come true. The following morning, we hiked to Kala Patthar before sunrise. Watching the first golden light illuminate Mount Everest was undoubtedly the highlight of my trip and one of the most beautiful sights I have ever witnessed.
Although trekking at high altitude was physically demanding, our guide's experience made a huge difference. He regularly checked our oxygen levels, adjusted our walking pace, and ensured everyone remained comfortable throughout the journey. Our porter also worked incredibly hard while always greeting us with a smile at each tea house.
The accommodation and meals were better than I expected for such a remote mountain region. Every evening, our guide discussed the next day's plan and shared interesting stories about Sherpa culture, local traditions, and the history of Everest expeditions. These conversations made the trek even more meaningful.
I was particularly impressed by how well Nepal Himalayas Trekking managed every aspect of the adventure. From airport transfers and domestic flight arrangements to permits, accommodation, and logistics, everything was handled professionally. I never had to worry about anything except enjoying the mountains.
For anyone planning an Everest Base Camp Trek, I highly recommend Nepal Himalayas Trekking. Their knowledgeable guides, excellent organization, fair pricing, and genuine hospitality created an unforgettable experience from beginning to end.
Thank you to Mr. Prakash Lamsal and the entire Nepal Himalayas Trekking team for making one of my lifelong dreams become a reality. I hope to return to Nepal soon for the Annapurna Circuit Trek with the same wonderful team.
